in Windows

Why does Dell have to ruin the built-in Windows Wireless Utility with their own bulky, unfriendly, Dell Wireless Lan Utility? For all those who want it removed, here’s how you do it:

  1. Go to the Start Menu
  2. Navigate to ‘Dell ControlPoint’
  3. Click on ‘Dell ControlPoint’
  4. Click on ‘Connection Manager’
    Disable Dell Wireless Lan Utility
  5. Click on ‘Profiles’ at the left
    Disable Dell Wireless Lan Utility
  6. Click on ‘Change Settings’ at the bottom
  7. Click on ‘Program Settings’
  8. Deselect ‘Wi-Fi’ and click OK
    5
  9. To ensure that the Built-in Windows utility works, click on Start Menu then Run and type
    “services.msc” and click OK
  10. Scroll down and right click on Wireless Zero Configuration and select Properties
  11. For ‘Startup Type’ select ‘Automatic’
  12. Start the service and click OK
    Disable Dell Wireless Lan Utility

You may now use the built-in Windows Wireless Utility to join wireless networks.

will the Dell utility work with a non-dell adapter? my Windows utility performance seems spotty and had good experience with the dell one - though on a diff PC... lotta variables I know - just thought I'd give it a try if it's viable. thx
  • Hi Bill,

I don't see why the Dell utility won't work. Give it a shot and let me know.

Manna from heaven!! Thank you. Freakin Dell Control Point was a hunk o' junk. Once I found your post, and could simply disable the WiFi through Control Point, the Microsoft WCZ picked up my Linksys wireless without a problem. Had spoke with Linksys tech support - little help - until they wanted to charge me for premium support. Thanks again.

You're welcome! I nearly threw my laptop across the hall but it took me such a long time to figure it out.
